Isolation and properties of protein fractions from navy beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) which inhibit growth of rats.

چکیده
A protein fraction which inhibits growth of weanling rats was obtained from Phaseolus vulgaris seeds of the Sanilac variety by extraction with sodium chloride solution and removal of extraneous materials by precipitation at pH 4.0 and absorption on I : I bentonite-Celite. The protein was precipitated by 0.75 saturation with ammonium sulfate. The growth inhibiting protein fraction contained at least four different proteins separable by electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation, immunodiffusion, and gel chromatography. Only one of the soluble proteins inhibited rat growth, and it comprised about 35 % of the total growth inhibiting fraction and had hemagglutinating activity, stimulated leucocytes, contained very little trypsfl~ inhibitor activity, and had an isoelectric point of pH 5.2 and a mol. wt of approx. IiO ooo. A protein which was insoluble at pH 4 and collected as a precipitate also inhibited growth of rats but because of the small amount isolated and its insolubility, it was not further studied.

Consumption of black beans and navy beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) reduced azoxymethane-induced colon cancer in rats.
Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are an important food staple in many traditional diets. There is limited evidence to suggest an inverse relationship between bean consumption and colon cancer. The objective of this study was to determine whether consumption of black beans and/or navy beans would reduce colon carcinogenesis in rats. Rats were fed a modified AIN-93G diet (control) or diets containing 7...
متن کاملNutritive Value of Navy Beans (phaseolus Vulgaris).
It has been known since 1920 (Johns & Finks, 1920) that the navy bean is an inferior source of protein for rats. Everson & Heckert (1944) reported that raw navy beans were injurious to rats when given at a 10% protein level. They also reported that autoclaving the beans destroyed the injurious effect. Kakade & Evans (1963a, b) confirmed this report and observed that rats given 10% protein as ra...
متن کاملThe Nutritional Value of Navy Bean (phaseolus Vulgaris) following Autoclaving or Dry Extrusion as a Mixture with Soya Beans for Growing Pigs
The nutritive value of isonitrogenous and isoenergetic levels of these processed beans, raw NB-SOY and NB-SOY extruded at 121, 135 or 157OC was assessed by pig growth assay. The raw NB-SOY diet caused severe scouring and was fed only for two weeks. Growth rate and feed conversion of pigs fed extruded NB-SOY improved as the extrusion temperature increased to 135OC but declined with higher temper...
متن کاملA survey of the nutritional and haemagglutination properties of legume seeds generally available in the UK.
Eighty-five samples from fifteen different legume seed lines generally available in the UK were examined by measurements of their net protein utilization by rats and by haemagglutination tests with erythrocytes from a number of different animal species. From these results the seeds were classified into four broad groups. Group a seeds from most varieties of kidney (Phaseolus vulgaris), runner (...
متن کاملEffect of variable protein contents in diets containing Phaseolus vulgaris beans on performance, organ weights and blood variables in piglets, rats and chickens.
A comparison was made of the effects of antinutritional factors present in Phaseolus vulgaris on piglets, rats and chickens. Also the hypothesis of whether the negative effect on weight gain due to the inclusion of raw Phaseolus vulgaris in the diet can be attributed to an insufficient supply of amino acids was tested. Test diets containing 200 g raw Phaseolus beans/kg were balanced for digesti...
